Masterpieces

This visualization creatively reveals 60 of the Rijksmuseum's most well-known masterpieces, one at a time, while simultaneously showcasing the museum’s renowned surroundings: the intricate streets and canals of Amsterdam.
Around 600 pixels from one masterpiece, sorted by hue from red to blue, gracefully flow along the canals of an Amsterdam map, gradually aggregating on a blank canvas. Due to the delays in animation and the breakdown by hue, different features of the pixelated painting get revealed over time, allowing the user to engage with the masterpieces in a novel way.
If users haven’t already identified the masterpiece from its pixelated depiction, the pixels eventually fade to reveal the full painting image, along with its name, author and date.
